Eco Roots Foundation, a non-profit organization, focuses on environmental and ecosystem conservation, particularly by engaging with the younger genera Read moretion. Its primary goal is to inspire both thought and action among school and college students, as well as corporate professionals, towards environmental and ecosystem preservation. A notable initiative of the organisation is the Bird Houses programme, led by Mr. Rakesh Khatri, the founding Trustee. Known as the "Nest Man of India," Mr. Khatri's passion for bird conservation has motivated people of all ages to create and install birdhouses across the nation. He is also a renowned environmentalist who educates students nationwide about environmental issues. Over the past decade, Eco Roots Foundation has actively engaged with youth in schools and colleges across the country. Its remarkable achievements include being mentioned in the Limca Book of Records for conducting climate change theatres in 24 cities, reaching 1,12,000 children. It also earned recognition in the Limca Book of World Records for involving 94,000 girls in theatre productions focused on water conservation through its program Neer, Naari aur Vigyaan. Additionally, the organisation received the International Green Apple Award in 2012 for producing over 1,20,000 handmade Jute nests during workshops with students. Its work has even been featured in the ICSE BOARD English Course Book in 2019.

Impact

Eco Roots Foundation has made a significant impact, conducting 4,671 workshops on bird nest making, resulting in the creation of an impressive 476,388 nests, additionally, it has organised 53 workshops on water conservation and hosted 120 theatre festivals.

Programs

  • From Waste to Wealth Programme

    Eco Roots Foundation, in partnership with SIDBI, tackles two pressing issues in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. It aims to revive seven water bodies by eliminating the troublesome Water Hyacinth, revitalizing these ecosystems. Simultaneously, the project empowers 140 women through training in Water Hyacinth removal and product creation from its stems, providing a sustainable income. This initiative not only restores water bodies but also uplifts local women, supported by the District Administration. Product development is already in progress, showcasing Eco Roots Foundation's commitment to positive change.

  • Green Window Programme

    Eco Roots Foundation launched "Green Window" in partnership with HCL Foundation during the COVID-19 pandemic to address the disruption in community health and education caused by school closures nationwide. This initiative brought together teachers, students, children, guardians, and specialists. It involved organizing 30 workshops in Government schools across Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka, targeting 300 teachers/trainers and 3,000 students/trainees. Additionally, they created a valuable audio library with 12 podcasts covering diverse topics like water conservation, Indian birds, waste recycling, and biodiversity. Expertly crafted videos enhanced the understanding of nature. Moreover, it trained 30 "Harit Buddies" from Government schools to further spread environmental awareness in their communities. This successful project covered multiple states and cities, engaging 360 teachers/trainers and 3,712 students/trainees, totalling 4,072 direct beneficiaries.

  • Nest Making Programme

    Eco Roots Foundation's flagship program, "Nest Making," spearheaded by its founder has been a decade-long endeavour. This initiative involves nest-making workshops conducted in schools, colleges, residential welfare associations (RWAs), and corporate offices. Remarkably, as of March 20, 2023, Mr. Rakesh has personally contributed to the creation of over 600,000 nests through these workshops.

  • Sci-fi Media Trailblazer Programme

    Eco Roots Foundation delved into uncharted territory with the "Science Fiction & Science Media Talent Hunt: Challenge 2022," a nationwide project sponsored by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication, Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India. This initiative aimed to nurture the interests of the younger generation in science fiction and science media talent. Specifically, it sought to engage young change-makers between the ages of 8 to 14, fostering a profound appreciation for science fiction. The initiative served a dual purpose, scouting for a comprehensive understanding of science fiction among school-going students in both urban and rural areas, and promoting science literacy and scientific temper among youth. Furthermore, this platform served as a repository for sharing science media products and forward-thinking ideas generated through the programme.

  • Eco Next Media Programme

    Eco Roots Foundation, in partnership with the National Council for Science & Technology Communications and the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, introduces "Eco Next Media." This project aims to nurture creative scientific thinking and practical solutions for environmental challenges while providing young minds with mentorship from experts. It focuses on developing young eco-media professionals and promoting eco-literacy and scientific temper among youth. The project begins with teacher training in five targeted regions, followed by Eco Studio Training for young media professionals. These workshops empower schools to create various media formats addressing scientific problems from a public perspective. Outstanding work is recognized through the Young Change Makers Awards.
